Chop Wood
(Lisa Biales)

A student asked a Zen Master, now that I have been enlightened, what should I do? The master says, before enlightenment you must chop wood and carry water, after enlightenment you must still chop wood and carry water. The task remains the same, however, it is you my little cricket that must remain enlightened.
She’d chop wood and carry water
Way down from the drinkin hole
It wasn’t work it wasn’t bother
She felt it deep down in her soul
And her hands worked for a living
To the rhythm of a song
And with children she was giving
Oh yeah she’d teach them right from wrong
You know her heart was always gracious
She said, “To thine own self be true”
And the hand that rocks the cradle
Is gonna rock you too
One day she asked her master
What am I supposed to do
You said enlighten comes in phases
And I must strive to know the truth
I am thankful for my blessings
To have a song in my heart
I am through with second guessing
I guess I knew it from the start
And there must be a good reason
When I sing it feels so good
Now I understand the lesson
On my guitar I chop wood
